The new Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) for medically important feed-grade antibiotics and prescription rule for water-based antibiotics take effect on January 1, 2017. Under the new rules, medically important antibiotics can only be used to treat, control, or prevent specific disease under veterinary guidance. Producers must have a valid veterinary-client-patient relationship (VCPR) before a VFD may be issued.
